Redskins still trying to deal Haynesworth

The Washington Redskins have once again started up trade talk with another team about defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

That other team just happens to be the Tennessee Titans, who they had already talked to earlier in the offseason about Haynesworth.

The Titans would welcome Haynesworth back but feel that the Redskins demands are still too high.

Washington is asking for two draft picks, which is an awful lot considering Haynesworth’s enormous salary.

The Redskins have grown tired of the defensive tackle’s attitude and feel he has become a major distraction to the rest of the team.

Portis expecting to be the star

The Washington Redskins have a very crowded backfield situation as we sit here today and it remains to be seen how it will shake out.

The incumbent, Clinton Portis, is down to 217 pounds and seems motivated to be a force again.

Maybe the acquisition of other running backs got under his skin, but he seems fired up to play this year.

Portis said he expects to the be the main man for the Redskins and that he runs things in Washington.

It’s important to note that head coach Mike Shanahan is in charge now and tends to use his running back until he starts to slow, then moves on to the next guy.

McNabb warns of Philly boos

When Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb played in Philadelphia, there was plenty of booing directed at the home team.

McNabb felt that the booing was directed at him a lot of the time, something he said will be a big change in Philadelphia.

The quarterback warned his former teammates that he will no longer be around to take the heat.

He said it will be much harder for players to avoid the criticism now that McNabb can’t put it all on his back.

It’s a good point, but I doubt most pro athletes are all that concerned or affected by upset fans in the stands.

Shanahan confident as Redskins await details on Moss

Washington Redskins head coach is confident that starting wide receiver Santana Moss won’t be disciplined by the NFL following the news that Moss allegedly received HGH from Canadien doctor Anthony Galea, who was accused of drug smuggling, conspiracy, lying to federal agents, unlawful distribution of HGH and introducing an unapproved drug into interstate commerce last week. Shanahan has said that he feels “very good” about the situation.

Moss, who was one of a handful of athletes who allegedly received HGH from Galea, has declined to comment on the story to the media, but told his teammates that he had no idea that the doctor was injecting him with HGH during the three times he was treated by him.

Still, the NFL could suspend Moss whether he knowingly took the HGH or not. Commissioner Roger Goodell has made it clear that he’s going to be proactive about disciplining players to maintain the integrity of his league. Multiple players, including star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, have been suspended without ever being found guilty of anything in the court of law.

In light of this story and the possibility that Moss, the team’s No. 1 receiver, could miss time this season, rumors have swirled about Terrell Owens joining the Redskins. The embattled Owens, who spent last season in Buffalo, has yet to find a home. It would be an interesting acquisition, reuniting him with quarterback Donovan McNabb, with whom Owens had a tenuous relationship during their season together in Philadelphia.

Redskins Right Ship, Stop Bucs

After another dismal first half and another double-digit halftime deficit, Jim Zorn must have heard the hounds howling. Once again, the Redskins came out guns blazing in the second half, scoring on a huge play to Santana Moss to set the tone for the half.

Granted, the Redskins missed the extra point to go with that Moss TD, but they ultimately beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home, 16-10, in Bucs’ QB Josh Johnson’s first NFL start.

The game couldn’t have started off much worse for the Redskins, as they had already given up two sacks and a fumble within the opening two minutes. Johnson immediately struck, hitting WR Antonio Bryant for an 8-yard TD pass that was Johnson’s first NFL TD pass.

Redskins’ QB Jason Campbell began pressing en route to a three-interception game (his first three-interception game “ever”), absolutely killing the Redskins offensively in the first half. Luckily for the Redskins, Campbell made the necessary halftime adjustments, started working his TE Chris Cooley in the second half, before hitting Moss for the big play.

The Redskins face 0-3 Carolina next week - the Panthers were on a bye this week.

Zorn Calls ‘Skins “Soft”

In the postgame press conference after the Redskins 23-0 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Coach Jim Zorn clearly wasn’t happy with his team’s effort. Tracee Hamilton of The Washington Post wrote an article on Saturday aimed strictly at Zorn’s displeasure.

“We missed tackles, we were soft in other areas, both offensively and defensively, soft playing with that kind of intensity,” he said. “I thought there was a lot of guys out there playing, but they didn’t realize how difficult a game this really is and we paid for it in some of the situations.”

The Redskins suffered a troublesome loss to the Ravens on Thursday night, with the team not progressing past the Ravens’ 30 yard line and giving up 500 yards of total offense to the Ravens.

Despite holding out new free agent Albert Haynesworth, the Redskins’ first-string defense very much maintained a bend-but-don’t-break mentality against Ravens QB Joe Flacco and his first-string offense.

While the preseason often results in little meaningful information, Coach Zorn is working with everything he got from Thursday’s game.

“That was the first test,” Zorn said. “It was a difficult test for some of these guys. Some failed; some came through with flying colors; some now need to rise up.”
